You got it, Roger!
Who said this?

"Unlike the man who was asked to do something for posterity,
and replied, "Why should I? What has posterity
ever done for me?", I have a great concern for
posterity. I have many grandchildren who are going
to face a world different from the one we know today.
I hope that they, and all the generations to come, will
learn from contemplating the life of Abraham Lincoln
that the preservation of this Nation and of its Constitution
and obedience to its laws are paramount political
responsibilities, and that, like him, they will
"hew to the line", trusting in the Help and Justice of
God."
A present?
This person was not a President.
Tom Hanks?
Good guess, but not Tom.

Hint - Tom Hanks has something in common with our mystery person.
Daniel Day-Lewis?
Martin Luther King?
No and No.

The quote is from someone who is no longer alive.
Frank McGlynn Sr.
Very good Steve,

it comes from the author's preface to his book, Sidelights on Lincoln.

From Wikipedia -
"Frank McGlynn Sr. (October 26, 1866 – May 18, 1951) was an American stage and screen actor who in a career that spanned more than half a century is best known for his convincing impersonations and performances as Abraham Lincoln in both plays and films.

Thomas Kearney found one of his old movies here

He has been briefly mentioned here in the past. I wasn't expecting anyone to get this, especially with so little clues. How did you ever know?.
I used the clues provided that he was an actor like Tom Hanks, that he was dead, and that he had grandchildren. I also inferred that he played Lincoln frequently. I found a Wikipedia list of actors that played Lincoln and two actors met the above description - Frank McGlynn Sr. and Charles Middleton.
This may have come up before.

Who said , " Jefferson Davis and other leaders of the South have made an army; they are making, it appears a navy; and they have made what is more difficult than either, they have made a nation."
I have no idea who said it, but I love it! My guess would be a Brit, perhaps the PM? Palmerston?
very very warm, Laurie ... but not correct.
