This book was written by John W.Headley in 1906.Very interesting, but no new information.
One good thing about Headley's book is that it may well have the only known photo of Sarah Slater, the elusive Confederate courier who spent some time on the road with John Surratt. The photo is not of the best quality, however.
Laurie,What I found very interesting, was, that in his book-He never mentions Slater or Surratt by name.He was a Southern Spy involved in many operations- The burning of NYCity hotels. He was Kentucky's- Secretary of State after the war.CYA or what? He revealed what he wanted to do.
A good underground agent doesn't leave trails - for the present or the future to follow. That's a positive trait for them and a pain in the neck for researchers!
Someday I'd like to study more on this to see what place Detroit had in it- if at all. Does the book talk about Detroit?
The book says a little about Detroit and the Great Lakes. He does reveal that he was directly involved in a plot[never pulled off] to take VP.Johnson hostage.
Herb: did I understand you to say that the spy/operative is not mentioned in the book by name?
Bill,The author was an operative. He does say that there was a plot to burn all of the Northern Cities on The Great Lakes from-Chicago to Detroit.
Thanks Herb. Wow. It would not have been the first time that both Detroit and Chicago had been to the ground. Glad it didn't happen though.
Bill,The author was proud to admit that he was part of the Beall Plot.Did you ever hear that there was a plot to hold VP.elect Johnson hostage? I learned something from this book!-Herb
Herb: no, I had never heard that one. There is always something to learn!

I found his comments about trying to cause all the fires at different motels in NY City a bit disturbing. A lack of regard for the lives of any innocent victims to their acts of terrorism. Writing about it several years latter, he still seems a bit boastful and proud of his actions. The only hint of regret was that they were not successful
I think Headey was an Ego-maniac!-Herb
