Gene, I haven't seen it yet, but will pick up a copy of it the next time I'm downtown in DC, and report back.

That book just arrived in the Surratt gift shop. I have not had a chance to look at it either. I have found with this series of "Images" books that it all depends on who the author(s) are as to the quality of the history.

Looking at the picture on the Ford blog site caused me to wonder if we know what the colors were in 1865. What were the colors of the curtains, the walls, etc? We are so used to seeing the black and white photos that it seems natural.

There are remnants of the wallpaper and curtains that have survived. Those and Brady's photos were used during the initial restoration.

Joe is correct! The NPS did the same thing across the street at Petersen's where all the wall paper had been borrowed by relic hunters. They used surviving samples to have it duplicated. I believe Jim Garrett was volunteering there during the process.

Someone posted something once about the process that was used to replicate the wallpaper and how very expensive it was. Is that in your files, Rich?
