Get the guest room ready, Roger. My laptop and I are coming for a visit when something goes wrong or changes...
Thanks, I ordered a computer with Windows 7.
Power to the People!!
Windows 8 continues to make me suffer. Donna has an Apple. I'm ready to join her.

Microsoft is releasing a free "upgrade" this week to Windows 8 users. It's called Windows 8.1. I will be installing it on my Windows 8 computer. Bill, I will let you know if it makes it any less frustrating. Personally I agree with all the negative comments folks have made about Windows 8.
Please do let me know!
Well, it looks like I'm going to have to go down the same road. My desktop is no longer functioning. Even though I have a laptop, I need the desktop as well. Man, I am not going to enjoy this.

Well, I was able to get most of my files over to my laptop, which I'm going to use for the time being as it works OK. The only problem I have now is that I didn't back up the work I had done on my book proposal, especially the overview, so I get to redo all that from scratch. Luckily, everything else, including ALL my financial records, were backed up Monday, so they are current.

The fallout continues. Not only did I lose my entire book proposal, but somehow I forgot to back up all the pictures I've taken over the years. I still have all the pictures I took in Springfield as I didn't delete them off the camera, but all our Christmas photos, graduations, birthdays and pictures of Droopy (and Rosebud before her) and all other ones are gone. That's really frustrating.

We purchased a new laptop computer with Windows 7 factory installed. It came on Monday. The customer service young lady was from India, 25 years old with a degree in computer engineering and math. She was very good and knew what she was doing. She also spoke gooder English than me. She works for Dell. We had everything stored on a click free automatic backup drive (my wife purchased from QVC - I owe her a nice dinner). It even saved my internet favorites. My wife couldn't get it to transfer, but the customer service lady could. She got every thing transferred over and said she was going to get one of those back up drives now. So far, so good. And I don't have to deal with Windows 8, worth a little extra $ to me.

Rob, sorry to hear about your bad luck.
How is Droopy doing?
Thanks for asking, Gene (and thanks for the pictures you e-mailed me this morning).

Yesterday, she wanted to go walking like she would do before and this morning she ate all her breakfast. Before, she had just picked at her food and ate small amounts. I think she's turned the corner. She made it all the way from our bedroom to my office only bumping into a few things along the way, so she's still comfortable getting around the house. It's still a little tricky going down steps, but she takes it slow.

That's why I decided to just use my laptop, because it works well and it's still Windows 7. I do have to get a new copy of Microsoft Office and Quicken (the latter which I normally update every other year anyway), so that's still cheaper than getting a new computer.

Rob -

Did your hard drive crash or was it something else wrong with the desktop?

If it's the hard drive you may be able to get your documentation/book off of it. It's not too difficult. What platform/OS (Windows version) is your desktop PC?
Betty,

It's the whole computer. It won't boot up or even turn on. I've got a friend whose husband works on them, and I plan to ask her if it's possible to get the info from it, but I'm going to proceed on the assumption that it's gone.

The desktop is Windows 7.

Thanks.

Rob -

Get your friend to retrieve the hard drive. It's not difficult to extract the data - I've done it; Vista can be difficult - but Windows XP and 7 is not from what I've heard.

Glad that Droopy seems to be doing better -

I love macs...but finances dictated I had to purchase a PC laptop this time round.Confused
