Mary and the African American church

For some reason, I remember reading about these events within the past year or two, and I think it may have been in the fairly new book on Mr. Lincoln's White House. The author's name is escaping me at the moment (maybe even a slightly different title). I'm still "hung-over" from sleep deprivation during the Surratt Conference.

There were three different events:

4 July 1864 - Picnic/fundraiser held by St. Matthew's Colored Sunday School on the White House lawn

11 July 1864 - Picnic/fundraiser held by the other St. Matthew's Sunday School (i.e. white) at Washington Park on 7th St.

4 Aug. 1864 - Picnic/fundraiser held by 3rd Colored Baptist Sabbath School on the White House lawn (although, from reading the announcement, it looks like this event was sponsored by several Sunday schools)

Donna the article about the 4 Aug. event is the one I thought you were referring to in your earlier post, it comes from page 3 of the 5 Aug. 1864 edition of the Washington Evening Star. The other three images are advertisements for the upcomming three events that appeared in the Star. Their publication dates (in the order Roger posted them) are:

1. 3 Aug. 1864

3. 1 July 1864

4. 10 July 1864

In his SIX MONTHS AT THE WHITE HOUSE, F. B. Carpenter described the event on July 4. I am surprised that he did not mention that one was held in August. Thanks to everyone for helping me sort this one out.

They both address aspects of the topic of this thread and are related to the ongoing discussion (especially Burlingame's to my recollection).

Both speakers were in Springfield and involved in an ongoing discussion related to their talks in the panel session. I was in attendance. I would say there was some disagreement about various aspects of the talks (especially about Mary’s role and view on African Americans) but it was interesting to listen to how different people can interpret the same facts differently based on their own ideas and the influence of other sources that one or the other may not have been familiar with (or again just interpreted differently).
