Hack Alert and Book Report
Hi everyone. If you start having problems with your e mail, blame me. I was Hacked. I have been told that the Hacker may visit anyone that I have contacted. (Sorry 'bout that.) I'm back on line after over 3 weeks of "Tech Support". This situation gave me tim to read CHARLES HIGHAM's "MURDERING MR> LINCOLN" (A dissapointment)
Pg 194. "John Patts Brown, father of Josephine Brown". I konw him as John POTTS Brown. Pg 194. "Lt. Charles Keyworth, of the Signal Corps" KEYWORTH ? Pleeze! Higham probably got that from someone else - he didn't research Cawood, or he makes careless notes.
Pg 226. "Augustus Howell...reported that Surratt had used his position as a employee of the Commissary General of Prisoners, to pass on information to him and for Surratt to convey to Richmond."
Might that not be Weichmann with the Commissary General????

Overall, I liked the book, borrowed through Inter-Library Loan. But the errors make me reluctant to cite his book as reference. There was much about the "New York Crowd". I agree with his conclusion that the "Copperheads" were only a 'Paper" organization and there wern't any THOUSANDS ready to rise-up and fight.

RE: Hack Alert and Book Report
John, this is becoming more and more common. In the past calendar year I have received bogus emails from at least 5 people whose names I recognized as friends. Thus, one thinks it's safe. But it's really from a hacker who has acquired the address book of a friend. The hackers are constantly working on ways to break into computers; sometimes it's through a security hole in a browser and sometimes it's through other security flaws in operating systems, other programs you use, etc.

The most important thing is NOT to click on the links in these bogus emails. It's a great way to give your computer a virus. And always have your computer's firewall set to the "on" position (although that is the default setting on most newer computers, and you shouldn't have to worry about it).

We have one person on our block who did click on a link in a bogus email, and now his computer starts up in SLEEP mode. And it stays locked in sleep mode and does not wake up. Currently it's useless until a fix can be found. I told him to see if it starts OK in safe mode, but I have not yet heard back from him.

One of the very best free programs is here. I have used the free version for years, and it is very effective at cleaning out an infected computer. However, I have seen computers that are so badly infected that programs like this are non-functional and won't even start. So there are no guarantees. Depends how bad the virus is.

John, remember way back when I asked you about the New York crowd and cotton traders? It was Higham's book that gave me the idea to ask you what you thought.

The obits of Charles Higham revealed his mendacity. Errol Flynn's family sued Higham for claiming Flynn was a a Nazi spy. It was found that Higham faked documents to prove his case. The courts threw out the lawsuit on the grounds that the dead have no legal redress to libel or slander.

RE: Hack Alert and Book Report
I had several conversations with Mr. Higham while he was working on his book (until I finally turned him over to Joan Chaconas of my staff - she's much more patient than I). It was my impression that he had his mind clearly set on what he wanted to portray and was not about to let mere facts stand in the way.

Another security flaw was in the news yesterday. Rather than disable Java I went to my Control Panel and deleted it completely.
