Not to be confused with Laurie Verge. An easy way to remember Laurie's name is to think "on the VERGE of insanity."

Many years ago, I did an article for the Surratt Courier on which Christmas carols were around during the Civil War era. I know that I Heard the Bells on Christmas Day was one with a very sad reason as to why it was written during that time. I'll have to find that article.

Easy to find! Deck the Halls, O Come All Ye Faithful, and Hark The Herald Angels Sing have been around since the 1840s. It Came Upon A Midnight Clear (1850), Jingle Bells (1857), We Three Kings (1857), and this one is surprising - Up On The Housetop was written in 1860! I almost forgot Silent Night and Away in a Manger.

So "Little Saint Nick" didn't make the list? Just kidding. It's interesting to know what songs were being sung and played then. I would have thought "O Holy Night" would be one of them.

For some reason, I think O Holy Night is a rendition of a French carol. I'm not sure what era it dates to, though. There's a homework assignment for those of you with inquiring minds...
