Just my opinion, but I now agree with Jerry. I do not think it was an economic hit. After reading the article Joe posted, I find it difficult to believe there was an organized effort by a large number of cotton traders to assassinate the president. Certainly there was some dissatisfaction, but to me it's quite a stretch to see them as being behind the killing of Abraham Lincoln.

IMO the New york Crowd was not supporting Booth's effort to assassinate Lincoln. "The Crowd" was a collection of disgruntaled peolpe, who would like to see Lincoln - GONE, each for their own reasons. So, Atzerodt was expressing his oun evaluation of the situation, namely, If Booth didn't shoot him, someone else would. BUT, someone in New York was "controling" Booth.
