2024 Surratt Society Meeting and Conference
The Surratt Society will hold its Annual Meeting and Conference on Saturday, April 13, 2024, and it will be held virtually via Zoom. (We have heard from some long-time Surratt Society members that they miss our in-person Conferences, but times and logistics have changed which make the Zoom "meetings" more readily available.) Here are the details:

Per the Surratt Society’s Bylaws, the meeting will include a brief business meeting for the election of officers for the 2024-25 term.

The Executive Committee has proposed the following slate:
President: William Binzel
Vice President: Louise Oertly
Treasurer: Tom Buckingham
Secretary: Rebecca Morris

Following the business meeting, our speakers will be Timothy S. Good and Dave Taylor. It should be an excellent program.

We will convene via Zoom at 2:00 pm ET and should finish by 4:30 ET. The meeting and Conference is free and open to ALL who are interested; however, you MUST pre-register at: https://www.surrattmuseum.org/society-events .

ABOUT OUR SPEAKERS:

Timothy S. Good, author of We Saw Lincoln Shot, and the National Park Service Superintendent of the Lincoln Home Site in Springfield, IL who will speak on:
"On the evening of April 14,1865, when President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated in Ford's Theatre, an entire audience was witness to the tragedy. From diaries, letters, depositions, affidavits, and periodicals, this program is based on a collection of accounts from a variety of theatergoers―who by chance saw one of the truly pivotal events in US history."

Dave Taylor is our second speaker, who maintains the Lincoln Conspirators.com website (formerly "Boothie Barn"). Dave will speak on
"The Death of Abraham Lincoln:
Reactions From a Divided Nation."

RE: 2024 Surratt Society Meeting and Conference
Congratulations Bill on your election as President of the Surratt Society. Louise has done a masterful job and I am certain you shall as well. I appreciated the brevity of the business meeting. Both speakers were excellent and we all know of the good job Dave Taylor does. Under your regular email, I'll send you some information on Cornelia MacDonald. She was 100% secessionist and paid dearly for it. She and husband Angus ran a girls school in Winchester pre-war. One or two of the Lee daughters attended the school. It closed in early 1862 as the war descended upon Winchester. Angus was tool old for military service but served as an C.S.official at Richmond until his death early in the war. Thanks again for a wonderful program.

RE: 2024 Surratt Society Meeting and Conference
Thanks all. It was never a position that I sought, and personally, I would have elected Louise Oertly as president-for-life if the Surratt Society Bylaws permitted, as her efforts and contributions have been immeasurable. My objective is to maintain the Surratt Society in some semblance that Laurie Verge would recognize. The relationship between the Surratt Society and the M-NPPC that owns and operates the Surratt House Museum remains uncertain. Stay tuned.
