All the local hires on the film - and everyone else, for all we know - signed agreements limiting what they could say about the film. That's OK. Go see the movie if you want to know what happens.
What we can tell you is that a hole in Sally Field's silk stockings had to be repaired, and that Daniel Day-Lewis carried in his pocket a replica of the handkerchief that Lincoln's wife had embroidered. All of that detail stitching was done by Portsmouth resident Judi Flowers, below, who became known as "Miss Fix-It" on the set.
The film's researchers had gone to the Library of Congress to discover what personal belongings Lincoln had with him on the night he was killed, and Day-Lewis carried the same items. The handkerchief was stitched with seven cross-stitches to the quarter-inch and, to Flowers' knowledge, it never left the actor's pocket.
Day-Lewis' socks were hand-knitted for the film, and Flowers had to darn one of them, for authenticity. Then she did the same for two more socks, as back-ups.
'You can do a film without all this,' Flowers said. 'But Spielberg is the Olympics. So he hires people who are going to do it right. Who cares? That would be me.'"
