Few Things Are Safe Anymore
It's not just Southern Civil War symbols that are in danger. The government agency that I work for has its hands full over a WWI memorial outside of D.C. that was erected in the 1920s by the American Legion. Our agency assumed the duties of caretaker a number of years ago and has been fighting to keep the monument through a series of lawsuits from anti-Christians.

I wonder how safe those stones marked with religious symbols in Arlington National Cemetery are? What will the countries overseas who have honored our men who died for their liberation decide to do in the future when such movements come calling on their courts? Do these factions understand that these soldiers died so that they could be atheist?

The Marine monument of the raising of the flag on Iwo Jima shows 6 soldiers and 13 hands. The sculptor said the 13th hand was the hand of God. Better see it before the extra hand gets severed.

I strongly believe that all such monuments should have a secure CCTV monitoring them at all times. There could also be a small notice nearby advising that the camera exists and that the film is deleted after (say) 2 weeks.
It seems that CCTV monitoring is widely used in the UK, less so in Australia unfortunately.
I guess the civil libertarians argue against CCTV, but I argue its something we need to prevent the lunatic fringe from destroying everything we value (and everything that allows the lunatic fringe to scream their little hearts out).
