RE: Assassination Trivia
Eva, that was a logical try, but Anita got it. And, yes, it's in Tim Good's book.

Anita, you win a beautiful weekend in California!

RE: Assassination Trivia
Dr. Tumblety. Suspect in the yellow fever infested clothing shipment, supposed Confederate agent, may have been seen in Herold's company and also a suspect in the Jack the Ripper murders. Kind of like the George W. Bush of his day - if you can't pin it on anybody else - blame Tumblety.

RE: Assassination Trivia
I have seen that photo before, and I think it's Dr. Francis Tumblety. Tumblety was arrested in connection with the conspiracy to kill Lincoln. It was rumored that he may have conspired with David Herold. War Department records indicate he was jailed, but they give no specific reason as far as I know. Nothing concrete was found, and the doctor was released. Basically, Tumblety was an Indian herb doctor who traveled all over the continent by covered wagon. Many towns had removed him as a quack, and he had been threatened by folks he had tricked. I also think some people believe he may have been Jack the Ripper.

I was writing this reply, and when I posted I see Joe got it first. I can add that Herb once posted that Tumblety is buried near where he lives in New York.

RE: Assassination Trivia
Several months after the assassination John T. Ford agreed to sell Ford's Theatre to the U.S. Government for $100,000.

The purchase price was not paid immediately, and the government leased the building in the interim.

In 1866 the Treasury paid Ford for his theater. Because of the lease payments the check was for less than $100,000.

What was the amount of the check Ford received?

Isn't this Clara Harris' letter recounting Mary Todd Lincoln's words about Clara's bloodstained dress? Mrs. Lincoln falsely believed Major Rathbone's blood was the President's.

You win, Dave. Kudos!

I was at Tom Bogar's book talk yesterday. Tom discussed Withers' "injuries." And I got the idea to post this question.
