"Symbolic Inauguration Moments"
Of timely interest:

"Washington's Bible, Lincoln's Hair: Top Symbolic Inauguration Moments."

Lincoln’s Hair: In 1905, Teddy Roosevelt was sworn in as president and close to him was a lock of Abraham Lincoln’s hair. John Hay, Roosevelt’s secretary of state who worked under Lincoln 40 years earlier, sent him a locket that contained the former president’s hair. Roosevelt had been a great admirer of Lincoln and was so inspired by Hay’s gesture that he took the locket with him to the ceremony.

Every time I think of a Presidential inauguration, I can't help but think of Lincoln's two inaugural addresses - lot of "symbolic moments" there!. There have been many inaugural addresses and Lincoln's stand among the very best. I just finished presenting a talk on the 1864 Presidential Election and I again had cause to read and include one of my favorite portions of each of his (readers on this discussion group will certainly recognize the last paragraph of the 2nd inaugural address):

“With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up the nation's wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.”

I think these are words we all should remember and I would hope we might all continually strive to achieve the goals so beautifully and powerfully set forth therein. I hope I am up to the task!!

Those words certainly move me every time I read them or hear them.

Michael Pence will be sworn in using the same bible Reagan used. Also, are any forum members coming to town for the inauguration? If so, maybe we could meet up Wednesday.

Mr. Lincoln's and Mr. Kennedy's inaugural addresses have certainly stood the test of time. Could it be that we remember them because they called on the American public to do what is right and just in order to assist our country?

From what I remember reading, Mr. Carroll purchased the bible for Lincoln to use at the inauguration because Lincoln's belongings (including their family bible) had not yet arrived from Springfield. I don't have a reference for where I read that much less if it is true. I also remember that Mr. Carroll kept the bible (makes sense if he purchased it) but that it somehow came into Lincoln's possession at a later time.

"Lincoln swore the oath on it at his first inaugural in 1861, as the United States stood on the cusp of the Civil War. It was not used again at an inauguration until the election of Barack Obama, who was sworn in on it in 2009 and again in 2013."

Thanks! It's the "story behind the story" that I often find of interest. I will see what I can dig up, too.
