Pictures of the Conspirators
For your amusement, Google "1865: Portraits of the Lincoln assassination Conspirators".
We have all seen these pictures before. They are the Alexander Gardner collection from the Lib. of Congress collection, but I was impressed with the clarity of these, and the size - some are 8 1/2" 11". |

RE: Pictures of the Conspirators
Thanks, John. I did what you indicated and ended up here:
http://mashable.com/2016/06/11/lincoln-c...8h5dROGkqn I was curious about the words, As a nation mourns, eight men await judgment. I think this is confusing as it looks like they included photos of Joao Celestino and Hartman Richter but none of Samuel Mudd and Mary Surratt. I think we once discussed this previously, but could someone answer this again...why were no pre-trial photos of Mary Surratt and Samuel Mudd taken? |

RE: Pictures of the Conspirators
The site is also erronous in that it claims Powell "broke into Seward's House" - as though he was a burglar, etc.....

Many of the conspirators were held aboard the Saugus and Montauk to prevent the public from trying to sabotage the prison were the people "responsible" for Lincoln's death were kept. The Montauk and Saugus were docked at the Navy Yard were no one could sabotage or destroy. |

RE: Pictures of the Conspirators
Correct, Paige! Mrs Surratt as well as Dr Mudd were both held at the Old Capitol Prison - not on board the monitors. Gardiner's "mug-shots" were taken onboard the monitors - not at Old Capitol. If there are photos taken at Old Capitol, where are they? Rose O'Neal Greenhow had her photo taken in the courtyard of the Old Annex of the prison in 1864....either by Brady or Gardiner - I think Brady.....

Betty-- that is an amazing picture of Rose Greenhow; I have always been fascinated by her! You are absolutely right about the picture of her-- it was taken by Brady. You reminded me that the picture is marked on the bottom "by Brady." Here is a closer view of the picture of Greenhow: |
