Was Joseph Pulitzer's wife a cousin of Jefferson Davis?

I have seen a few references that state Kate Pulitzer was related to Jefferson Davis. I saw reference to an article in "Time" magazine dated 8 Aug 1927 under Milestones that stated this. She was of Georgetown, DC. Her dad was William Worthington Davis (b. abt 1814, d. 1887). Joan Cashin, in "First Lady of the Confederacy...." also states that Kate Pulitzer was related to Jefferson Davis and her father actually was a first cousin.

I have not yet found support for this. Does anyone know whether this is correct, or is this a later fabrication for convenience in Winnie Davis' relationship to the Pulitzers?
