H-Street Blueprints?
Has anyone ever seen a blueprint of the H-Street Boardinghouse that includes measurements of the rooms? I have a diagram but no dimensions are included. I'm guessing the answer is no but I'm putting the thread out there anyway.

I don't remember ever seeing measurements, and I assume you have checked the HABS report. What about land and/or tax records?

Do you have any dimensions? If so, you can "Scale" the drawings. (One dimension will give you all of them)

PS Google "Surratt House" See Roger Norton.s drawings. He gives dimensions. I assume they are good.

RE: H-Street Blueprints?
I have not tried googling, but an article submitted to the Surratt Courier in 1982 by Harold Wang does have a diagram of the second floor (only) and does have dimensions that I had forgotten about. Harold is one of the few people to have been given access to the old house during the 1960s-1990s.

Without begging someone to scan the drawing for me, I'll just report that Harold lists total inside floor dimensions as 49 feet in depth from front windows on H Street to back alley. He does not give the width and depth of the side hall. The front room (Mrs. Surratt's parlor) is listed as 20x20; the back parlor as 16x20; and two small bedrooms in the rear (used by Honora Fitzpatrick and Mrs. Surratt) as 10x10 each.

I found this link, not sure if it helps:

RE: H-Street Blueprints?
Thank you all for your help. I was able to get some much needed answers from your responses.

Laurie, I believe that I have Mr. Wang's article and Carolyn's link to a former post included a photo.

Carolyn, thank you for the two links. They were very helpful. I'm still looking through the NPS document but it is already extremely interesting.

Carolyn, thanks for the links, that was interesting.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?

KateH. Don't give up, or settle for something less than what you want. It's very easy. I'll show you how right here.

Thank you Carolyn; that NPS paperwork brought back memories because we worked with the nominator when it was considered for the registry back in the early-1990s. Reading the pages reminded me that the house dates earlier than 1850 and that Augustus Gibson was not the original owner. I gave up trying to figure out how he and Mr. Surratt combined debts so that each one got out from under and actually gained something!?

Jim, we should host an H-Street karaoke party. A whole night of Civil War music (interspersed with facts about Lincoln's assassination and me going off topic and singing Buddy Holly). Wink
