RE: Who is this person?
(07-18-2024 01:30 PM)J. Beckert Wrote: David Davis? Not David Davis. This person served in portions of the last two centuries only, but he lived almost the length of a full century. Next clue: This person was confirmed as an an associate justice of the United States Supreme Court by a 98-0 vote of the United States Senate. RE: Who is this person?
To answer this trivia question, one would have know much more about the history of the Supreme Court than that of Abraham Lincoln. There was only one-way connection in history between the two great men.
The man who I consider to be one of the greatest justices in the history of the United States Supreme Court is Justice John Paul Stevens. In researching the history of Justice Stevens in Wikipedia, I came across today a relevant story that hopefully portends history. The story reads: On January 20, 2009, Stevens administered the oath of office to Vice President Joe Biden at Biden's request. It is customary for the vice president to be inaugurated by the person of their choice. On April 9, 2010, Stevens announced his intention to retire from the Supreme Court; he subsequently retired on June 29 of that year. Stevens said that his decision to retire from the Court was initially triggered when he stumbled on several sentences when delivering his oral dissent in the 2010 landmark case Citizens United v. FEC. Stevens said "I took that as a warning sign that maybe I've been around longer than I should." "So very difficult a matter is it to trace and find out the truth of anything by history." -- Plutarch |

RE: Who is this person?
That was strictly a guess on my part. Glad one finally worked out!
OK, so here's one from me. No Googling, please. Who is this person and what connection did he have to the Lincoln assassination? Best Rob Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell

Is this one of the cavalry soldiers that pursued Booth after the assassination?
So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |

RE: Who is this person?
That's a logical guess Gene, but incorrect. In fact, he didn't experience the assassination first hand.

RE: Who is this person?
You write above "he didn't experience the assassination first hand"
Did he interview one of those that was in the theatre? “The honest man, tho' e'er sae poor, Is king o' men for a' that” Robert Burns |
