I drove by the U.S. Grant house in Detroit three days ago. Sad to say- nothing has been done to keep up it's maintenance. We have been told that behind the scenes there are efforts aimed at preserving and restoring it. It was also supposed to be relocated to a new site. I hope that all is true.

My former son-in-law would have made Grant throw up. He likes his steaks braised for about twenty seconds on each side and then served. We have actually been to restaurants where the chef has come out and refused to cook it that way because of health regulations. One made him sign a waiver that he would not hold the chef or restaurant liable for any sickness. Yes, it was embarrassing! Notice that I said "former" son-in-law. He had much worse traits, however, than liking raw meat. Sorry for the mother-in-law comment...

Am I a twisted individual because this post gave me the best LOL(laugh out loud) moment I have had all week??

Gene: that is the house, indeed. Unfortunately, unlike the picture- the house is very run down and uncared for now. Because the property is fenced in- one can only take pictures from outside the fence looking at the back of the house. I took several pictures which I will post when I can.

I think that every state has (or should have) a Historic Trust or Preservation Commission within both their state and county agencies. If Michigan or Detroit has such a group, they should be working to at least stabilize the building for now.

Also, is the U.S. Grant Association aware of the problem? Lincoln expert Frank Williams, retired Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Rhode Island is a leader in that organization as well as the presiding officer of The Lincoln Forum that meets every year in Gettysburg. The late-John Y. Simon used to be very active in it and was pretty much in charge of their collections, I believe.

I have sort of lost track of the organization, but for some reason I think they are based at Mississippi State University where the current person in charge of the collections is based. Kinda ironic that Grant might be taken care of now by Jefferson Davis's ex-territory -- and I do not mean for that to initiate an argument! Call me a turncoat, but Grant happens to be on my "Like" list.
