RE: Lincoln’s Childhood
Here's what I have in my files as to the "blab" schools Lincoln attended. If anyone sees an error, please let me know. Thanks.
Abraham attended school in Kentucky for a few weeks in the fall of 1815 and again in the fall of 1816. In 1815 his teacher was Zachariah Riney, and in 1816 the school was taught by Caleb Hazel. In Indiana in 1819-1820 Abraham attended school briefly. The teacher was Andrew Crawford. In 1822 Abraham attended a school for a few months. The teacher was a man named James Swaney. Finally, in 1824 he attended for several months a school taught by Azel Dorsey. |

RE: Lincoln’s Childhood
From what I have read about the "blab" schools- the method of having all of the students read aloud together was primarily for the benefit of the teacher to "make sure" that they were engaged in her reading. It's a wonder if that method was most helpful to the student.
This may relate to the matter or not. I once attended a training on Schizophrenia a long time ago. To help us better understand what it must be like to have auditory hallucinations (typical in Schizophrenia)-each attendee had to wear headphones for 15 minutes in which were heard multiple voices at the same time (similar to the "blab" situation?). This was done while trying to concentrate on a written narrative problem requiring our utmost powers of focus. Needless to say, it was very difficult to do. Bill Nash |

Thanks.Roger, Are you aware that Caleb Hazel was family to Abe? His wife was Mrs Elizabeth Hall, relic of James Hall. Her daughter, Elizabeth Hall, married William Hanks, son of Joseph and Ann (Lee) Hanks. Also, Levy/Levi Hall, a son of James and Elizabeth Hall, married Nancy Hanks, daughter of Joseph and Ann (Lee) Hanks. Caleb Hazel's step-children are named in the attached deed. I corrected the date for Caleb's marriage to Elizabeth Hall. A stray mark made a 3 appear as a 5. they were married 14 Feb 1783 in Nelson Co., KY. |
