The thirst of knowledge on Lincoln from Senior Living Centers

Lately,I have been given many requests from local Senior Living Centers.They want knowledge on The Lincoln Assassination,Civil War, Local Connections to the Civil War,and The Underground Railroad.You never stop learning!

Yes,This fun you get great questions and tremendous stories.It is turning into a fantastic"Show and Tell".

We have a lot of senior visitors, senior group tours, and requests for speakers at senior centers also at Surratt House. A very familiar statement that we get from them is, "You know, I never really liked history in school and when I was younger. I wish I had paid attention to it more."

One of the main things that attracted me to the Lincoln Assassination was the fact that I never knew the full story! All they told us in elementary school was that "JWB shot Lincoln in Ford's Theatre in Washington, DC and escaped to a farm in Caroline County, VA where he was shot in a tobacco barn."

No mention of Herold, Mrs. Surratt, Powell, Atzerodt or anyone else! It wasn't until I was 22 years old and read Risvold's edited edition of Weichmann's book which had just hit the scene that I realized that a woman was involved - and much more!

It's been the "ride of a lifetime" and more fun than a barrel of monkeys every since! Like Mr. Hall said, once it bites you, it'll never let go!

While my 8th grade social studies teacher was great and inspired me to be an 8th grade social studies teacher, I'm afraid that I am one of those who could say, "I never learned that in school" about a lot of things. If it had not been for parents and a grandmother who loved history and took me to as many historic places and museums as they could, I would never have developed a life-long passion for the subject.

That's great Herb! What a rewarding experience for both sides.
My wife has a man come into her class every year to do a class on thr Revolutionary War. He dresses up in full uniform and brings with him books, uniforms, and memorabillia from the war. He also does classes on the civil war and World War II. He was telling her that he was a retired history teacher and does these classes for a living. The children love it, but he says that the retirement homes are his best experiences. He says that the people there are so eager to hear him speak for the history but also for the entertainment. He gets alot of participation in the forms of questions and stories. He said the same thing, that he gets to learn from their personal memories. When it comes to World War II, some were either there or at home while their loved ones were away. Even the Civil War, some have memories passed down from generations not so long ago. It is a very rewarding experience, is how he put it.
You're not by chance dressing up like Paul Revere and traveling the school circuit in Bartlett, IL are you?
