RE: Did William Coggeshall Save Lincoln's Life?
I wonder if timing had something to do with this. Mary Coggeshall's letter to her daughter was written in 1908, and her newspaper interview (where she changed the location of the grenade incident to Baltimore) was in 1909. This was the time of the centennial celebrations of Lincoln's birth. Throughout parts of the country, towns and cities were having parades, concerts, school programs, speeches, etc. Newspapers were filled with articles about Abraham Lincoln. Possibly all the Lincoln-related talk at the time gave Mary Coggeshall the inspiration to embellish/create the role her long deceased husband played in Abraham Lincoln's life.
