The question Qui bono? assumes in this case that (1) we know, or can determine, the motivations of people who are, in most (all?) instances, long dead, and (2) their motivations were rational and comprehensible. I've lived in the world long enough to have learned, among other things, that many people lie with abandon for no apparent reason whatever, though in some cases I think it is just for the private, personal satisfaction of putting something over on others.
