Some eyewitness accounts do not mention Forbes at all. James P. Ferguson was sitting on the side of Ford's opposite the State Box. Ferguson said:

"Some time near 10 o’clock, during the second scene of the third act of “Our American Cousin,” I saw Booth pass along near the President’s box, and then stop and lean against the wall. After standing there a moment, I saw him step down one step, put his hands on the door and his knee against it, and push the door open—the first door that goes into the box."
