Back then almost no one smiled for pictures (I say "almost" because there have been a few surprisingly smiley people in CDVs, but they are definitely not in the majority). It was just how it went. In a couple of pictures he does look like he has a small smile though... or at least he has a *very* pleasant looking manner that looks like he has a tiny smile in my opinion (make of that what you will!).

I think this could be a slight variation of the picture in this pose that we usually see, like the one Betty found below, in which he doesn't look very "smiley." I have been meaning to compare them in Photoshop but never have.

As for how many were taken and when the first one was, I don't think we know for sure.

Thank you for your comment, Jenny, and for taking time to scan these photos! It's amazing, the first two photos look like the same one at the first glance, but indeed, upon closer examination, the upper one seems more "smiley"!
