In all fairness to Susan Jackson, wasn't she a new employee, and John Surratt would not have been staying at the boardinghouse during her time there? Or was there some overlap between her hiring and John being there?

Offhand, I do not recall ever reading there were ever any plot-related discussions within earshot
of Susan Jackson.
