JWB and Company and Atrocities Against Southern Citizens

Joe brings up some good points here.

Does anyone have any thoughts on whether or not atrocities against Southern civilians by the Northern army fueled JWB and company in their conspiracy against Lincoln and the Federal government? Powell definitely saw retaliation against Confederate soldiers by George Custer's unit - could he have witnessed other atrocities against Southern citizens?


Am I opening up another "can of worms" here? Thoughts?
