What's the story behind your post? Inquiring minds want to know.
What triggered your search? How did you know who to look for and where to look?

Thank you, Gene! Germans...we need everything in order ;-)

I had come across this quote a few times and it somehow irked me that in every variation, no details on the people involved were given. It was always "leading radicals" or "the most prominent...".
So after seeing it a couple of times, I tried to look up a source - and it was always Donald. I knew that could not be the original source and that is how it started.

I have noticed that researching this particular part of history is not always free of politics and every once in a while, a quote gets twisted or taken out of context.
More often than not, it happens with Lincoln quotes - but in this case it was Julian.

I'm quite a newbie and lacking so many important books - Rob's advice to find the Nicolay/Hay biography online is Christmas come early!
And Eva is a walking encyclopedia - when she mentioned Julian, digging up his diary wasn't all that difficult.
