I believe Ray Neff was a proponent of the NY Crowd theory.
For those who haven't read it, his book "Dark Union", lays out a lot of unsubstantiated claims and confusing naratives about the NY Crowd, with much of his theories based upon questonable documents, the Potter Papers. He weaves a complicated story that will leave you with more questions than answers. Other than that, it is an interesting book.

So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in?
