You mentioned that Thomas Lincoln's mother Bathsheba is a bit of an unknown. Like you, I have seen the surname of Herring attached to her but I don't know much else.

Ms. Fitzpatrick sounded like she was attached to or consulted for the Abraham LincolnDNA project (Genetic Lincoln). That project, as I understand, was focused on the Hanks family. So if she was aware of DNA findings that indicated AL had some African American ancestry, I would conclude at this point (based only on those few comments in the video) it came through the Hanks line.

Steve, is your take the same on that?

Sorry about the delay, I didn't see your reply/question until just now.

Knowing the history of the LincolnDNA project - the likelihood of this coming through the Hanks line passed through my mind as well. But after thinking about this a bit more, it would probably be easier to find a reliable African DNA ancestry result through the Lincoln line rather than the Hanks line due to the (hmm, how should I put this..?) messiness of the Hanks family genealogy. There's really no way to guess about this until we see an article or paper on where this genetic signal is coming from.
