RE: Vachel Lindsay (1879-1931)
The house belonged to Mary's younger sister, Ann Todd Smith - her husband was Clark Moulton Smith, a store keeper in Springfield. The Smiths had eight children; four of them, including a young boy named Lincoln Smith, died as children. One of the many Todd relatives in Springfield described Ann's house as having, "a fountain in the yard, and flowers of many varieties, and statues of deer, etc., peeked out of the shrubbery; her parlors were carpeted with deep pile velvet and her furniture was mostly Vernis-Martin."
