One 20th century case that I can think of is the Nuremberg Trials after WW2. The US was a major participant during those trials.
I also point out that the difficulty of finding jury members that are independent and unbiased becomes enormous during high profile cases. "Milligan and Surratt were not residents of states that had succeeded."
