Booth's final words to the Union soldiers, as they asked him to surrender, sounded to me more like the words of a second rate actor, in a second rate play, who is portraying the character of a rejected and wounded "hero" facing a martyr's death. If you read Booth's diary, he certainly envisioned himself that way. So when is this "Old Enough To Know Better" supposed to kick in? |
