RE: Gath, Stuart, and E.G.D.G.
For anyone interested in trying to figure out more about "E.G.D.G." I would point them to the records of the Century Company. In looking for Tarbell-related material, I came across a webpage from the New York Public Library, which is in the process of digitizing the Century records. All the general correspondence, where one would imagine letters to the editor would show up, has been digitized. Someone with more time (and interest) in this topic might look through the 116 boxes worth of material. Given that the date range of the correspondence is to the side of the entry, one need not go through every letter. Also note that the Civil War series is not completely digitized yet, but it's possible the material might be in there as well.
Happy hunting! Best Rob http://archives.nypl.org/mss/504#c1139437 Abraham Lincoln is the only man, dead or alive, with whom I could have spent five years without one hour of boredom. --Ida M. Tarbell
