A little more on our Hero. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Feb. 5, 1863, in Washington, D.C. for a 5 year term of General Service.
However, he was discharged on April 1, 1863 (a mere 2 months later) to accept a Class 1 Clerkship with the Adjutant General's Office, as a Sergeant. This sounds like he was working for the North before he got mixed up with the Rebs.

Here is what he looked like. He had gray eyes, dark hair, and a ruddy complexion. He was 5' - 8 1/2" tall.
