I understand now.
Hundreds of thousands of people file past Lincoln's coffin to see a statue of him in his coffin, and no one makes mention of it, until now. No history books, no diary entrees, no newspaper articles. And to help carry on the charade, they have two morticians travel with the statue to keep it real looking and plant fake news articles about the real body's deteriorating condition.
