Probably David Barry, a near neighbor of the Surratts.

Rick is absolutely correct. David Barry had been a long-time friend with John Surratt, Sr., and the two had worked together in the 1840s on the construction of the Orange and Alexandria spur of a railroad in Virginia. He owned property across the road from Surratt's Tavern and may have been one of the reasons that the Surratts decided to move from lands that John, Sr. had inherited to the intersection where the house still stands.

Like most of the people in this area, David Barry was a Confederate sympathizer. Barry's son was also the "boyfriend" of Anna Surratt before the war. I believe his name was Arthur.
