Laurie, FWIW I was joking about his intelligence. I believe not only could he be devious but since he was a man with little pride who enjoyed shooting small prey, he could also be talked into murder by his hero. he was the type of young man who would do it for the glory and praise he could obtain no other way.

I certainly agree with your last sentence -- and I think that his father may have been to blame for creating his son's personality...
