When you're far away from home, the church can (and should be) be a welcoming and friendly place.
It can be a place of escape from the cares of the world, to draw nearer to God, and seek his help.
It's where we can find comfort and support from others we share a common faith with.
Some people try to take advantage of that.

In my opinion, for John, it was a combination of all of those.
