Before I walked through that door, I would want to be able to have a look inside if at all possible. And it seems perfectly reasonable to me that the Ford's were trying to divert attention by claiming that they were responsible for the hole. If it was my theater, i'd definitely be trying to do some damage control too. And once you've told that story, you've got to stick to it forever and ever amen. To me, Booth boring the hole just makes the most sense.
