RE: Confederate Flag
Dr. Medford herself brought up the flag issue briefly in the course of her talk and related it to the ongoing problems created during the Civil War and afterwards in a terrible Reconstruction era where 6+million souls were given freedom without the education and means to take advantage of it.
She made an interesting point that, when first gaining freedom, the push was on by both sides to give the freedmen the vote first. Land came next, and education last. They quickly realized that things had to be reversed. Trust me, she does not speak well of Andrew Johnson, who never got over his hatred of the upper class and used politics to attack them - leaving many of the freedmen caught in the middle. She also expressed frustration at the numerous attempts that have been arranged by current government officials within the past few decades to have significant dialogue on race relations. Such efforts have gone nowhere because the parties involved shirked their duty. |
