I enjoy the ones you are talking about also, Betty. They are the annual ones and do not come in hordes. The periodic ones who emerge from the ground in 13- and 17-year cycles are the ones who are deafening just because of their sheer numbers (in the millions). A lot of people refer to those as locusts, but they are not. In fact, I don't think locusts and cicadas are even of the same family.
