I enjoy the "music" of the annual cicadas, but on the 13- and 17-year cycles when the periodical varieties appear by the millions around here, it is not pleasant. Their noise can reach levels that compete with nearby Joint Base Andrews. They also can bang you in the head when you are outdoors, and the females are death and destruction to some of our trees and bushes because they lay their eggs in them so the kiddies can feed when they emerge. I don't want a Silent Spring, but a slight mute would be nice.
