Logbooks of the Gunboats
I have been organizing my copies of the Logbooks of the Gunboats (April 13 thru April 25), with the idea of making another attempt at making them available to everybody. BUT, there are 23 Logbooks with at least 13 pages min. - that's over 300 pages. I can't put that much trash on this Symposium. Every page is not significant. Some time ago, I tried to put them on a disc and sent that to Laurie, but our computers were not compatible. She couldn't print them out. (That is a LONG TIME ago!)
What now? Should I try to make another disc? Should I haul the whole mess up to Clinton, and put it directly into their computer? (That's News to Laurie). Even though there is very little mention of Lincoln or Booth, (which in itself is significant)), they are an excellent source of weather data on the days mentioned (13th to 25th). There is a description of the arrest of the "notorious" Thomas Nelson Conrad and his transport to Washington "In double Irons" and the arrest of Fanny B. Dade. and her trip to D.C.. (When she arrived at the Navy Yard - 3 MEN got off the boat - she was in disguise.) (She was a Union Agent.) Someone may want to plot the location of each Boat and see how Booth was able to get through the maze. This is where I learned that there were Lightships, up and down the River . So, I can see some use for them to a writer, but how do I get them to you? Professor Alford called me, a log time ago, to ask about the names of people arrested, I couldn't help him. The logbooks are brief account of events. They would record an event, but rarely would they give names. The log may say "Arrested a woman and two men attempting to cross the river, and out them aboard the "Don". The "Don" being the Flagship. Thus, if you knew there was an arrest at a specific time, then you can put 2 and 2 together. Where do we go from here? Does anyone want this info - pronto? or should I just put it in the Surratt Museum and it's there forever? |
