Great Newsletters
Fred Hatch's annual Journal of the Lincoln Assassination has been received and gives a great synopsis of events surrounding the 150th commemoration as well as listings of new publications and more.
The summer issue of the Booth History Spotlight, the newsletter of the Junius B. Booth Society, is also out and has a wonderful article entitled "Ella Mahoney Reminisces About Tudor Hall and the Booths of Maryland." For those of you who may not know, Mrs. Mahoney lived in Tudor Hall from 1878 to 1948. She published a small book, Sketches of Tudor Hall, in 1925, but Terry Alford discovered an unpublished manuscript titled The House That Booth Built while researching for his book, Fortune's Fool. It had been kept by a woman who assisted Mrs. Mahoney in writing and typing the manuscript. The portions of the manuscript that are published in this current issue of Booth History Spotlight are fascinating. Mrs. Mahoney's first husband, Samuel Kyle, purchased Tudor Hall directly from Mary Ann Booth, so much of these reminiscences center around Booth "things" that were found in and on the property as well as conversations with some of the neighbors who had watched the family grow up. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the 3+ pages of this article! The Booth Society is really making headway in turning the property into a bona fide museum dedicated to the theatrical world of the Booth family. You can learn more at http://juniusbrutusbooth.org/ |
