The Mysterious Stone

So was the stone placed in the Washington Monument?

That's what I would like to find out. I was hoping someone was familiar with this and had tracked down the story.

These are the only two links that I have found so far that come close to the story. However, the timing is off about twenty years. My original source has the stone being delivered to the White House in the 1870s, not the 1850s.
