RE: Lincoln twice ferried
You are absolutely correct, Kees. I had incorrect information on my website for 17 years before I was alerted that a correction needed to be made. On December 7, 2013, I received this email:
+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Mr. Norton, You mention on your website that the Lincoln funeral train arrived in Albany. That is incorrect. It was Rensselaer. From there the casket was ferried across the river to Albany. While ceremonies were held at the capitol the actual train was run up to Troy where it crossed the bridge over the Hudson River and came back down to the terminal. Sincerely, ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Kees, I can add that the coffin of Willie Lincoln remained on the funeral train during all of this switching. It was guarded by sentinels of the Veteran Reserve Guard of Escort. |
