On this I agree! Anyway, I came to think this is not an issue to advise or criticize anyone on how to do it better or right afterwards. No one of us was present or has experienced and felt exactly the same, who knows what we would have done and decided in the very minute - except that I think Mary should have been allowed to be with her husband in this final minutes.
