56 miles in 36 hours? With little food? During a war? A feat that just seems incredible! In the Army, we would go on "forced" marches of 25 miles. I was in the best physical shape of my life and a spry 19 years of age. We carried about 35 pounds on our backs. Those marches were killers. I can't even imagine what Jackson's men endured- in what was much worse conditions.
