RE: Lincoln & Herndon
William Herndon "retired" to his farm named "Fairview" (no longer extant), located northwest of Springfield on Chinkapin Hill. In the 1830s Chinkapin Hill was the site of a settlement of black farmers who resided there for a number of years.
Herndon, who died in 1891, is buried in Oak Ridge Cemetery a short distance from the original receiving vault where Lincoln's and Willie's bodies were temporarily placed. I have asked Roger for help in getting photos of the sites onto this posting. If you would like to see Oak Ridge Cemetery and many other places of interest, contact Gene Cook about this year's October tour. *************************************************** Many thanks, Joe. I am adding the photos you sent: FAIRVIEW
