RE: Lincoln & Herndon
Mary did deny ever talking to him at first, which was really dumb of her. She had to know that he was too clever for that, and that she would be humiliated in the end. But I still maintain that he twisted what she told him, and took advantage of her generosity in granting him an interview in the first place.
I doubt if Lincoln would ever have truly embraced orthodox Christianity, he was too much of an intellectual truth seeker. But to me at least it is pretty obvious that in the final months of his life he was moving closer to the accepted and widespread religious beliefs of his contemporaries. The Second Inaugural, for example, is not the work of a sceptic, a universalist, or a deist in my opinion. Mike, congratulations and thanks for the heads up on your new book. It sounds like something I would VERY much be interested in reading. |
